Retreats. Jackie Suginaga

Sacred space for renewal, reconnection — and quiet transformation.

My retreats are more than a pause — they are a healing space, a reset, and often a powerful first step or continuation toward something new or long-forgotten within you. One step closer to your true potential. Whether a one-day gathering or a weekend immersion, each retreat offers a doorway back to your body, your breath, and a deeper sense of self.

No two retreats are alike, but all are energising and expansive, restful and deeply reflective. Through a blend of Hatha and Kundalini Awakening Yoga, meditation, movement, stillness, and through sacred ritual, a special space is created for real transformation — grounded in presence, care, and intention.

At times, I also share a simplified Japanese tea ceremony — a practice I was honoured to study while living in Japan. Rooted in mindfulness and quiet reverence, this ritual invites us to slow down and be fully present, one sip at a time.

Why Tea?

Matcha and ocha (Japanese green tea) are not only deeply nourishing — they’re rich in antioxidants and calming compounds such as L-theanine, which support mental clarity, focus, and balanced energy.
Matcha, in particular, offers a wealth of additional benefits: it promotes detoxification through its high chlorophyll content, improves cognitive performance, and supports metabolism.
Studies have shown that L-theanine, when combined with caffeine, may enhance memory, attention, and reaction time — fostering calm alertness rather than overstimulation. EGCG contributes to fat oxidation and thermogenesis, making matcha a gentle aid to metabolic health and weight regulation. L- theanine also stimulates alpha brain waves, which are associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state, and matcha’s natural antibacterial properties support oral health, including gum and tooth care.
In the context of a retreat, tea becomes more than a drink — it becomes a ritual of grace and gratitude, a mindfulness meditation that anchors the spirit and softens the nervous system.

As Sen no Rikyū, the revered 16th-century tea master, taught:

“The Way of Tea is nothing more than this: boil water, make tea, and drink it.”

As the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us:

“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves — slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future.”

Within this simplicity lies profound presence.
The Japanese concept of Ichigo ichie — “one time, one meeting” — invites us to honour each moment as a singular, unrepeatable encounter. Each cup becomes a ceremony of presence, humility, and appreciation, reflecting the core values of Sado: harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquillity (jaku).
